Madeline Hess is an electrical engineer and lighting designer at AE Works, Ltd. in Pittsburgh, PA. She graduated in 2021 from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor and Master of Architectural Engineering, concentrated in lighting design and electrical systems, as well as a minor in German. Her thesis, documented by this website, received both the Best Overall AE Senior Thesis Award and First Place Lighting/Electrical Thesis Award in Spring, 2021.

During her education, Madeline had the opportunity to gain a breadth of work experience from three summer internships. Her introduction to the professional field was as a lighting designer for a local theatre company. The following year, Madeline spent her summer with AE Works, an integrated AE and Security Risk Management firm, where she is now employed full-time. The summer after senior year found her in a hybrid remote / in-person internship at Lam Partners, Inc. Madeline was also given the opportunity to study abroad in Rome, Italy, where she was able to study timeless lighting applications in a new cultural context.

In her personal life, Madeline enjoys many creative pursuits, including drawing, songwriting, and various other writing projects. She can often be found in a coffee shop on the weekends, working toward the completion of her fifth novel. Her other de-stressors include pampering the family dogs, singing loudly in the car, and hiking/caving.
